1. Objectives / Evaluation Criteria



Objectives:
·         Give an introduction to the life and reign of Queen Victoria.
·         Identify the important aspects of the Victorian Era:
·         The British Empire: peace and prosperity.
·         Overview of the social changes and problems.
·         Victorian ideals.
·         The Industrial Revolution.
·         The arts and science.
  • Study the main literary trends of the Victorian Era and the reflection of the society at that time. 


2. Contents of the Unit


  1. The Victorian Era: Queen Victoria, The British Empire, Victorian society and ideals, the Industrial Revolution, and the arts and science.
  2. Jane Austen: The Author.
  3. Pride and Prejudice: characters, plot, major themes and recent adaptations.

Nouns: reign, throne, motto, manufacturer, prosperity, labour, birth rate, lack, famine, upper/middle/lower class, suffrage, factory, duty, decorum, chastity, refuge, dweller, pastor, pride, prejudice, sense, sensibility, ball, maturity, rank.

Listening: The students will watch various videos in the English language which will give way to discussions and comprehension questions.


Reading: The students will have to read online articles related to the Victorian Era for the Webquest, along with an adapted literature text, “Pride and Prejudice”.


Writing: The students will have to answer some questions based on the online articles and they will also have to prepare a modern or different adaptation of the original text.


Speaking: They have to discuss topics related to the Victorian Era and “Pride and Prejudice”.
